The Management CommitteeAmity's Management Committee has overall responsibility for the management, policy and direction of the organisation. The Committee meets quarterly, and rotates its venue from Club to Club, to ensure that all members of the Management Committee have practical knowledge of all parts of the Clubs' work. Amity Reading Clubs Annual General Meeting is held under the auspices of the Clubs' Management Committee, and all members of the organisation are invited including all Students and Volunteers. The Executive CommitteeThe Executive Committee have responsibility for day to day management of Amity Reading Clubs; it is made up of Founding Organiser Gladys Glascoe and the Treasurer, Philip Glascoe. Due to the geographical nature of the location of its members, the Executive Committee works primarily through telephone conferencing. Duties include the promotion of the organisation, the recruitment of Students and Volunteers; training; management and support of the Supervising Tutors; contacts with venues; ordering of materials and equipment; IT management; servicing the Management Committee; financial administration; the preparation and inception of policy and overall leadership.
Founding OrganisersGladys Zonena Glascoe and Philip Glascoe founded Amity Reading Clubs in 1974, hence the name of their roles as Founding Organisers. Gladys Glascoe also originated the Amity approach to adult literacy tuition in her earlier work at the Blackfriars Settlement, more details of which are set out in the brief history of the organisation. The Founding Organisers give leadership and direction to the organisation, advise on the development of policy and club development initiatives and lead on the promotion of the organisation and its work. One of the Founding Organisers will always chair any meeting of the Clubs they attend.
TreasurerPhilip Glascoe is Amity's Treasurer, a post he has held since 1982. He is responsible for the preparation of Amity's annual budget for approval by the Management Committee; financial progress reports to the Management Committee; the receipt and disbursement of all monies; and the preparation of annual accounts for the Auditor. In addition, Philip Glascoe also leads on all major fund raising initiatives.
The SecretaryThe Secretary is responsible for servicing the needs of the Management Committee, minuting its meetings, preparing agendas and circulating reports and other documentation. The Secretary also plays an important role in the recruitment, interviewing and placement of Volunteers. In addition the Secretary works closely with the Founding Organisers in the Executive Committee dealing with day to day correspondence. The role of Secretary is currently vacant.
The Supervising TutorsEach Club has its own Supervising Tutor, who is responsible for the day to day management of their individual clubs. Their duties include the induction and ongoing evaluation of Students and their matching with individual Volunteers; the induction and training of Volunteers and their matching with Students; advice and leadership within their Club; monitoring of progress; contact with venue managers on a day to day basis; liaison with Executive Committee members; and membership of the Management Committee. Deputy Supervising TutorsDeputy Supervising Tutors are charged with supporting their Supervising Tutors in discharging the above duties, and are also members of the Management Committee. Current Deputy Supervising Tutors are:-
Student RepresentativesThe Students of each Club are encouraged to nominate their own representative on the Amity Reading Club Management Committee. As full representatives on the Management Committee, the Student Representatives have the opportunity to express their views on what the organisation should be doing for them and their fellow Students, and report back to their clubs on the work of the Management Committee.
