Introduction

Amity believes that we should really say "writing and reading", because writing plays such an important part in the development of literacy skills, and not least, because without the written word, there would be nothing to read.  For this reason, the written work of our Students is of particular importance.

It is important to you too; finding material for your student to read is always a problem.  What could be better then, than to use material written by one of their peers.  It may well be at the right level for your student, but more particularly it may also inspire your student to try writing themselves.  This would be a particularly good outcome, as writing certainly improves memory retention and is a highly practical outcome in the development of literacy skills.

Laurence Murphy's Word List

bullet

Although not Student's writing in the purest sense, this link takes you to a remarkable list of words developed by Laurence Murphy, through daily contact in his work place, fabricating parts for equipment used by disabled and handicapped people.  Fascinating on its own account, it will give ideas about developing similar lists with your own Student.

Clare Woodward: Autobiography

bullet

Clare started by writing a short piece on her regular physiotherapy sessions, and ended up writing her courageous autobiography.

Memories

bulletFor several years one of our Students has been developing his literacy skills by writing about a series of events in his life.  Some go back as far as the nineteen thirties; others are more recent, and include the events surrounding the attendance of his wife and himself at one the Queen's  Garden Parties.
bulletThe style of writing varies from topic to topic, perhaps reflecting the extended period over which he wrote about his experiences.  What shines through however is the man himself, his integrity, love and impish sense of humour.  We hope that you will find them as moving as we did; what is without doubt, is they will inspire your student to emulate them.
