Introduction
These case histories have been written up because they provide important lessons and insights for tutors in adult literacy. Not only do they provide guidance in what to do, equally important, they teach us what to avoid. These case histories have been drawn from our work with Amity Reading Clubs over the past 25 years. These are not academic reports, rather, they are sketches which illustrate important aspects of our approach, which we hope will be instructive in your work as an adult literacy tutor. After each Case History we draw a lesson, sometimes more than one. By linking each lesson to an actual case, we hope to give it a more vivid context, designed to help you to remember it. As you would expect, all the names have been changed. Contents
